Educational Game Enjoyment, Perceptions, and Features in an Intelligent Writing Tutor
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ability of educational games to promote students’ engagement in learning and practice depends on perceived enjoyment of those games. This study investigated high school students’ perceptions and enjoyment of games within the Writing Pal intelligent tutoring system. In accord with research on motivation, results showed that perceived helpfulness and difficulty of the games were the main predictors of enjoyment, whereas graphics quality and writing apprehension were not. Perceived difficulty was most salient for generative practice games in which students had to apply strategies to write original text.

Carnegie Learning, developers of the widely deployed Cognitive Tutor, has been working on several new adaptive learning products. In addition to demoing the Cognitive Tutor, an educationally effective intelligent tutoring system for mathematics that has been the subject of a great deal of educational and educational data mining research, we demo two iPad apps, an equation solving app that recog...
متن کاملEducational Software Features that Encourage and Discourage "Gaming the System"
Gaming the system, attempting to succeed in an interactive learning environment by exploiting properties of the system rather than by learning the material (for example, by systematically guessing or abusing hints), is prevalent across many types of educational software. Past research on why students choose to game has focused on student individual differences. Many student individual differenc...
متن کاملComparing Learners’ Affect While Using an Intelligent Tutor and an Educational Game
We compare the affect associated with students learning from an intelligent tutoring system, Aplusix, and a game, Math Blaster 9-12, covering very similar mathematical content. Quantitative field observations of student affect were conducted in classrooms in private schools in the Philippines. Students experienced large amounts of positive affect in both environments. It has been hypothesized t...
متن کاملThe Gameplay Enjoyment Model
To date, reviews of the games literature have noted a lack of empirical studies examining the relationships between games and their purported benefits (Huizenga, Admiraal, & Dam, 2011; Vandercruysse, Vanderwaetere, & Clarebout, 2012; Young et al., 2012). Furthermore, researchers have called for a better understanding of the specific game features that may lead to beneficial outcomes (Hartmann &...
متن کاملGamification of Joint Student/System Control over Problem Selection in a Linear Equation Tutor
Integrating gamification features in ITSs has become a popular theme in ITSs research. This work focuses on gamification of shared student/system control over problem selection in a linear equation tutor, where the system adaptively selects the problem type while the students select the individual problems. In a 2x2+1+1 classroom experiment with 267 middle school students, we studied the effect...
